On August 1st the sun will set around 8:00 PM. By September 1st it will be 7:15 and daylight will dwindle rapidly through the September. Preseasons start mid August, followed quickly by Pep Band, Snogard, homecomings, SATs, auditions for plays, District 3 Honors Festival, maybe some school visits, and getting college applications lined up (I know a great senior essay coach).

What a time. When can you find time for senior photos? And the weather…hotter than the hinges of hades…with wicked storms cropping up all of a sudden. Six weeks before school starts lets think about some times for senior photos now.

The golden hour, morning or evening, is a favored time for outdoor portraits. But the truth is it is really a golden thirty-five minutes. The good news is that in the morning and evening it is preceded or followed by the blue hour. Have a look at the photos above for a couple good examples of golden hour and blue hour.

I joke that unless your high school senior is working the tides they are sleeping in and only available for the evening hours. But last year a high schooler surprised me by offering to meet between morning band and school. The golden hour exists in the morning too and the light was beautiful that morning in Harpswell. I am up at 4:51 every morning so if the morning light looks good to you let’s pick some times.
