Bound in green cloth covered beveled boards with bright gilt title on the front board; in addition blind-stamped borders to the both front and rear boards, tight, bright and square. Spine, slightly rolled, shows a 3/4 inch slit where it meets the rear board. Gilt to spine is clean and legible. Cover shows some soiling. Foxing throughout. Page 45-56 have a tear from the top of the page just reaching the top line of print. Starting at one signature. Early owner name on first free leaf. 8vo. 136 pp. Illustrated by Birket Foster, engraved by H.N. Woods. According to Charles Calhoun's Longfellow, A Rediscovered Life, Kavanagh depicts what is probably the first lesbian relationship in American fiction. Spine-ends and corners worns; spine rubbed with some hinge chipping; cover and edge gilt bright, spine dull. The marbled end papers are bright and sound; interior clean. Front board and ffl separated from binding and text block. Gift inscription in neat in dated 1879. Other German translations precede this one ut this is the first German translation published in the USA for German/American consumption. Siller was a German American, he writes in the forward of his own experiences as a young man in simialr circusmtances toe Evangeline. Printed in Milwaukee from which the forward is dated. BC4-4. Very small tear (1/2 ) in cloth at rear hinge top. Gigt inscription in neat pencilled cript in front end matter, June 20, 1899. First printing hallmark, quotation mark at end of first line p. 34 present as called for by Merle Johnson s American First Editions 4th; however the second hallmark, lower case t in teacher in last line of p. 88 is not present. This state evidently not seen by BAL. Rare as of this listing date (Apr 2022) this is the only first edition available online. Shows prior owner’s name, Horatio Woodman in pencil along with an old Denison label with H.W. in ink script.
