The Brunswick High Men’s lacrosse team opened its Class B State Title defense with a 13-8 win over Class A Lewiston Friday afternoon. The Dragons who graduated their entire starting defense, two starting attackers, and All-American midfielder Tommy Labbe had a decidedly new look.
Neither team got out of the gate fast with Brunswick holding a 2-1 lead after the first twelve minute frame. Senior Nick Marro, who leads the otherwise green attack corp, opened the scoring after six minutes and within another half a minute picked up a nice assist on junior attacker Liam Stewart’s goal.
The Blue Devils got a goal back to end the quarter and briefly enjoyed a 3-2 lead in the second quarter before Brunswick rolled off four goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Just before the half Marro notched is 100th career point, an assist on a goal by first year Gage Senecal. Marro led all scorers with four goals and three assists.
Number 19, Senior Nick Marro, shoots against Lewiston in the 2023 season opener. Marro notched his 100th career point in this game with an assist.
On Brunswick’s defensive end the three new D-Poles were back-stopped by veteran goalie Jake Reeves who collected nine saves for the game. Brunswick looked comfortable in the mid-field with seniors Zach Stern Hayes (three goals one assist) and Chris Kousky (one goal, one assist) anchoring a crew that saw plenty of time in last year’s title run.
Senior Zach Stern-Hayes moves to the net against Lewiston. Stern-Hayes will play at Emerson College in the Spring of 2024.
The Dragons dominated the face-off spot with sophomore middie Gabe Shoemaker doing the dirty work in the middle. When Shoemaker did not win the face-off outright senior Iain Clendening, who collected ten ground balls, was there to give the Dragons possession.
Gage Senecal put three in the net and added a helper, Jared Similien rounded out the scoring for Brunswick.
Eli Bigelow, Cody Dionne, and Kyle Graves led Lewiston scorers with two goals each. Lewiston will host Bangor on Tuesday, April 18.
The Dragons next take the field at home Tuesday April 18, when they face Scarborough, a perennial Class A contender. The teams met last May when Scarborough took a 10-8 win. Because of school vacation, start time Tuesday is 11:00 AM
