Topsham, ME, On Tuesday night the Mt.Ararat Girl’s Soccer team grabbed an early 1-0 and held it through nearly sixty minutes of game time before surrendering two goals to the Bangor Rams. Bangor, last season’s Northern Maine Champion and State runners-up, used its physical game to hold the Eagles off for the remainder of the game. It was Mt.Ararat’s first loss. The Eagles fall to 5-1 on the season. Bangor moves to 6-1 and is at the top of the Heal Point Standings for the moment.
It won't get any easier for the Eagles in the coming days as they travel to 7-0 Camden Hills for a Friday afternoon tilt at 4:00 PM before hosting the Brunswick Dragons on Tuesday October 1. The Green Bridge rivals' clash will be the first of two regular season meetings.
Camden is a skilled team that showed discipline and excellent small space passing while taking down Brunswick last week.
These four teams topped Class A North last season with Bangor finishing at 13-1, Camden next at 12-1-1, followed by Brunswick at 10-4, and Mt. Ararat at 10-3-1. Chances are good the same four will top the twelve team table again this season. The path will be easier for Camden and Bangor however. It appears that only Mt. Ararat stands between Camden and a perfect season. Meanwhile the only remaining formidable opponent for Bangor is a late season match up with Brunswick.
Mt. Ararat, by contrast contends with Camden, Brunswick twice, and perennial Southern Maine Class B power Yarmouth. The Dragons will see Bangor, Mt. Ararat twice, and another Southern Maine juggernaut in Cape Elizabeth.
